How to handle a difficult person at work? |
Here's the skinny. I work with a guy who does database request work. Someone requested him to fix technical data. So, he needs me to review the changes for accuracy (I'm an engineer). I tell him it's a waste of time and we should employ a kluge that will fix itself. He didn't like my direction... So, he starts copying the world on email messages about how horrible I am vs. coming directly to me to work out the situation. Then I confront my boss with the situation and he tells me that he knows the guy is worthless and it's up to me to fix the situation. The truth is the guy is exhibiting poor behavior and should be dealt with by his boss. Instead I'm being told to handle the problem. I'm pissed because this guy is constantly being political and making an *** of himself, yet it's my responsibility to foster this immature behavior by appeasing his requests. How do I make it painful for him to exhibit this behavior in the future? How can I turn this into a public humiliation? Tell him to do his own work. Then, you can freely submit you idea for a permenant fix separate from what he is doing. Since his fix is a bandaid, and yours is permenant, it will become obvious to all concerned that you have the companies' best interest in mind while he wants to just get by. |
