I've used the Internet Jobboards,e-mailed resumes, responded to newspaper classifeds and still I seem to not be able to get a decent job.Now what else could some average white guy like me do to procur employment?
If you are spending more than 10-15% of your time on the job boards you are missing out on the most vital part of your search. Networking is the key to your success. If you think of every job you've had up to this point, how many of those jobs were because of someone you knew? In my case, 75% of my jobs were because of someone I knew either directly or indirectly. Job boards are important in showing you trends. They indicate which companies are in a hiring mode. But if every job ad gets 100 responses and of that 100 responses, 15 resumes make it to the hiring manager's desk, and of those 15 the hiring manager will meet with the 5 best prospects. Those odds are rather substantial. Whereas if you locate networking groups that meet on a regular basis and the members support one another in the search, networking can make for a more rewarding use of time. You can find local networking groups through the local unemployment office, local headhunters, chamber of commerce and other local civic organizations. I hope that helps. |
