What does working long hours really get you in the US?

I've met quite a few people who have worked 16 hour days in the office. My question is: what does that do for you? Is it to further your job, keep away from your home life, or something else? I work 8 hrs a day (sometimes less when I sneak out early) and always accomplish my work load. I've also come to find out that I make more than some of those who spend their life at work. In my opinion, long hours get you burned out quickly and ulcers. Do you agree or disagree? If working long hours is the American way, then I'm screwed because I'm not doing it.

I agree with you. I need my time off. And I seem to be able to get everything I need to within the regular 40 hour work week.

I'm sure some people do it to get further in your job (impress the boss), some do it for the overtime, so do it so they don't have to go home and some people likely do it because they need to (i.e. their work load is large and they can't get it all done in the 8 hours they have).

I've worked long days before but I try not to make it a habit.
