How to find a good attorney wrongful death?
Finding a good attorney is like finding a good doctor (or, really, a good person in any field). The best way is to get recommendations from someone who has used that attorney before. In your case, it doesn't have to be someone who had a wrongful death case. Wrongful death claims are no different technically than any other accident/injury case. So, if you know someone who was happy with his or her attorney in an accident case, talk to that lawyer first. Don't limit yourself to friends who have been on the same side of the case. If you are going to be a plaintiff, for example, by all means ask a *defendant's* lawyer (if you find one) for a recommendation about whom to hire as a plaintiff. No one knows the skills of another lawyer better than a lawyer who has had to fight against him. <grin>
What you want is someone who will listen to you, give you good advice, and generally work hard for you, but NOT someone who will always do what you tell them to. A lot of clients think that the lawyer should make whatever arguments the client thinks will work. If you are sure of what to say and do, then there is no reason to hire a lawyer--represent yourself (it's perfectly legal in most cases)--and save the money. You are paying the lawyer for his or her time and ESPECIALLY for his or her judgment. Again, it is like a doctor. You would never go to a doctor and decide what medicine to prescribe--you have to trust the doc about what is best for you. Do the same with the lawyer.
So, after you get a couple of recommendations, meet with the lawyer to discuss your case and decide if you have confidence in that person. Then, pick the one that gives you the best feeling of competance and of concern. Good luck!! |
