How to answer without making "excuses?"? |
If you've ever heard the line from your boss "I don't want excuses", you'll know what i'm talking about. Sometimes, there are valid reasons why you did or didn't do something. So how do you stand up for yourself without sound like you're just making excuses? On a larger spectrum, what are your views on the "no excuses" policy many institutions (work, government, school) take? reasons are not excuses. make sure you give reason and not excuse. reason is something beyond your control and no way to predict or prevent. reason implies you use good judgment and will take action to correct. excuse is when if you used brain you could have taken appropriate action before everything head south. reason implies responsibilty but excuse look like you are trying to get out of taking responsibilty. Try finding solutions to the problem instead of saying the "shoulda coulda woulda's". They like to think your brain is thinking on how to make things better. There are no excuses! You should stand up for your responsibilities. If you are committed to something, then do it. If you cant, then let your boss know you cant! if your boss is asking where is the project at, just say its at the top of your priorities and your working torward that goal, or something like that, be honest say you need help to accomplish whatever Sounds like this is a pretty cut and dry boss, i would, if it were me, ask to have a sit down while there are no current issues. Simply state, i understand you want a "to the point answer" and i am able to do that, but sometimes things do require an explanation, so for my own sanity, i would like the opportunity to answer, yes or no or directly and when i feel more needs said, or your may have interest ...i will answer, followed with "exception" or "sidebar". May sound corny, but i would be OK with it from any of my employee's... I understand the need to clarify, but sometimes don't want to hear it. I hope this helps in some way, if nothing else for a laugh; Good luck!! D www.stockmysite.com |
