I live in Chicago, IL and I have a BA degree, why am I still not working? |
I live in Chicago, IL and I have a BA degree, why am I still not working? Many times if your looking for a job you must call back and talk with the manager atleast once if your really interested. Have a conversation with him, and be friendly. Businesses like nice open minded people. Don't be afraid if you want to ask to come in one day and ask to be shown the ropes behind the counter. Sometimes the best job is a nonpaying job. Intern, or volunteer, everyone wants extra help for free. Also, make sure you look in the peaper! They're are always jobs in there. Never say you can't do something, or you aren't going to try and learn. I applied to a vets office to volunteer, got the job, and I'm just 15. Volunteering is so much fun, and usually people will pay for your food if your working for free. I also live in Chicago and I'm in the process of switching jobs as my long term temp job did not work (company's downsizing) and I found that looking at the local papers gives me better results than places such as Monster or Career Builder. First of all, you will need to tailor your resume to a specific job that you are applying for. Use the experience you have from the temp jobs to highlight your strengths when writing a resume. Few places worth looking for posisitions are: www.pioneerlocal.com, www.dailyherald.com. Also, my recent job I got thru an agency Corporate Link in Des Plaines, IL where they can find you either a temp or perm positions. Call (847) 699-4450, ask for Karen or Laura. Good luck with you job hunting! Get a Resume book and find out if your resume actually measures up. Then go through some of the questions on here regarding how to interview and what to wear. There were some good answers I have recently seen. A degree does not automaticly mean you are qualified to do a job, try ditching the degree from your cv to get a basic full time admin job. some employers see the degree & automaticly feel you will be looking for more than they can offer within a year aim to get promoted. then After a year or so start looking seriously with solid experience behind you & your degree put back on your cv. I totally understand what you are saying. I was in a similar situation after getting my BS. Sometimes the ball just doesnt bounce your way. Sometimes I worked and sometimes I didnt. Fortunate for me though was that I didnt have the same level of responsibilities that you do. I did however, go back to school for my MBA. Although I would not say that is the course of action you should take considering your family needs. I do want you to know that I am currently doing pretty well working for a reputable company. This should give you hope as you continue your persuit. If your situation permits, you may want to consider being more patient and try to get an office job. It would be a mistake to be short sighted and take the job at McDonalds considering the difference in quality of life. An office job would also give you more free time for your family and probably better benefits. Of course this is all dependent upon your current situation. In the end, I hope somebody here on this board is able to help you out. As I am not located in Chicago, there isnt anything I can do. Good luck! Get a professional to draw up a new resume, maybe it is too blah. Good Luck! Take out all your personal information and email me your resume. I will work one it over the weekend. There are several different types and styles of resume. My email is Errolyn27@yahoo.com In the subject of the email write Resume. There are also interviewing tips on-line as well. Can you please call your job placement center at the college you attended. They are willing to help up to year year after graduation. |
