Is it ok for a guy to work as an admistrative assistant?

I would really like to work as an admistrative assistant or file clerk, assistant to a sectratary or similar jobs of that nature. But these are not male jobs right? Isn't there a sterotype for guys working these jobs? I'm straight and would like to work in these postions but dont want to be seen as umm...you know feminine or umm....non-straight. Do the employees see it this way also?

Absolutely. and they often do better and advance more often than female counterparts (spoken from personal experience) .

It's become much more common and accepted in the last 10 years.
No not at all! I'm a adminstrative assistant and my collegue is a male. We work well together. These days there is no such thing a "feminine job". So go for it! Good luck!
Not with your poor spelling; you wouldn't be taken seriously by your boss.
Male or female, Gay or straight has nothing to do with it.
If it's what you want to do, that's an honorable profession. If others give you a hard time about it, screw them!
But, really, brush up on your spelling and punctuation first.
You bet! Office/clerical positions are not gender biased.
Just as there are male nurses so can there be male administrative assistants.
We have a young man (in his mid-20's) in our unit who does very well. He does 10-key and alpha-numeric data entry, as well as controlling the quality and flow of our workload. His job position is Senior Administrative Assistant.
In the United States, we have the most diverse workforce. If you think you can do the job, then do it!
Administrative Assistant is just a title and filing, answering a phone or typing letters on a computer does not make you less of a man.
I know a few male nurses so I suppose if "they'' aren't bashful of their position as a "nurse", then you shouldn't be bashful of your administrative asst. position.
If you like the job, if it pays money and if it's legal....go for it.
Whatever job you do....just DO YOUR BEST.
I know many guys that have started this way and worked their way up. Attitudes have changed drastically over the last 10 -15 years so be who you want to be!
I worked with a guy that has a huge impact on my career. He was the President of a hospital, and I reported to him.

How did he start his career? As a nurse. He was the straightest guy I have ever met, and he used his experience to help people, and to better understand his business.

I know several other guys that started as Admin Assistants and are now in powerful positions like Special Assistants to President's of Colleges and Universities making over $200K/year.

Do what you love, and do it better than anyone!
