As an Administrative Assistant, I've always wondered...? |
I've been at my job for exactly 1 year and 7 days. I work for a huge health insurance corporation (3,500 employees). I'm 24yo, entry level, 1st admin job w/o admin experience and my pay is 45,000+/yr. Now, I've noticed that other admins who've been here before me seem to get paid less. But of course no one talks about this on the job. What I don't understand is this.... I feel the Admins are pretty much the ones who keep everything for the boss/company in order. Without us, they would be lost. We pretty much hold everything together! So I don't understand why the pay is sometimes so low. (I'm not complaining about mine, I'm actually very happy and blessed) For example, my friend was looking into a Med. Asst. job and was told, she'd start of at $27,000. I mean, yes that's a start for someone w/o a job but I never understood why the pay is so low. Or is this just a NYC thing? I'm just bored and this thought came to mind. Have a great day! Sounds like they made a mistake and you're very overpaid. Shhhhhh! I don't get it either. Around here (MS), Admin Assistants start out in the low 20s. The cost of living here is way lower, but still, you can't realistically live on 20K/yr. I don't think people realize how much assistants do. You're right. We really do keep things running! Most huge corporations calculate wages according to work experience and education. If you have a college degree, your pay should be higher. If you work for a big company or for the government, your pay should be higher. Wages are also determined by the living standards in where you live. What I believe medical assistants do is just schedule appointments and regular paperwork, so the pay is much lower. Admins get more because they pretty much do everything. Many larger companies determine salary bands by comparing to other companies of similar size and complexity, based on the current market. (They also are likely to factor in experience.) If the market 3 years ago indicated $30k, then that's probably what they paid.Admins hired at that time wouldn't have had time to catch up if the market today is $45k. This happens in many fields, not just administrative assistants. You're right admins do a lot of work to keep things running smoothly. However, the executives carry a huge burden, make major decisions, etc., hence their larger salaries. The work I did as an admin was critical to my boss, it freed him to do the things that made our company extremely successful and profitable. It also depends if you're working for a small pribate comp then you're salary will be lower, it's mostly government and big executive company that pays more. Plus experience is an asset. HEY ANY OPENING IN THAT COMPANY??? LET ME KNOW |
