one fit and locked it, but now it wont unlock.

How do i get this thing open?

Call a locksmith. This happened to one of my filing cabinets. It was not the right key, but it locked it, it just wouldn't unlock it. We had to call a locksmith, but he had it open in less than 2 minutes.
Hammer and screw driver...ha
If the key lock the cabinet then it should open it try putting a drop of oil on the key that opened it.
If this is a common brand cabinet, odds are someone else in your office has the same key. If there's a number on the lock, any key with the same number will open it. Also, if you have a facilities department, they will usually have either one of each key in the office, or a master key that will unlock them all. I've also had luck using a couple of paperclips to break into the lock!

If all else fails, write down the lock number and the cabinet brand and take it to a locksmith. Of course, a hammer and heavy-duty screwdriver works pretty well to break the whole lock off - just remember to wear safety goggles!
on the locking mechanism (where you insert the key) there might be a code... letters plus numbers... and the name of the type of lock. for instance, it might be a HON 323L.

Get this code if you can, and then go through your spare keys to see if you have the one that matches or call a locksmith to see if he or she might have that particular key. Or you can call the manufacturer of the cabinet to see if they will send you an extra key.

Otherwise, you are going to have to get a locksmith to break into the lock and replace it.... ouch.. can get expensive!
