Letter of recommendation? |
I have to write a letter of recommendation for a past employee, but should i include on it that prior to employment we were freinds, or would that negate any commpliments in the letter as an employer? Thanks for you opinions. Your personal relationship with a coworker is completely irrelevant. You are recommending them based on their job performance and their qualifications for a similar job. You could, however, mention that the person you're recommending "works well with others" or "was a joy to work with" - that tells potential employers that they're not a "stick in the mud" without getting into personal details. Stick to the employment history. I wouldn't. A letter of recommendation usually is required of a professional contact. It would be appropriate to comment on the person's personality, especially if they're helpful, cheerful, positive outlook, etc. I think it will be easier for you to write the letter of recommendation since you know the person on a personal level, but I think you're right...if you were to mention your friendship outside of the office that would negate your recommendation. I don't see any reason to include that information but at the same time, I don't think there is any harm in mentioning it if this person was a good employee. You can say "So and so was an excellent friend, but proved to be an outstanding employee for reason x, reason y, and reason z." Or something to that effect. I don't you should add that in. Then it looks like you gave the job to the person b/c you were friends. It could be held against her. |
