Is it legal for an employer to demand your cell phone number? |
My friend's boss demanded that she give her cell phone number, and said that was in case when she was not at work (off the clock) and they want to call to tell her to do something when she gets into the office, so she can. Also she wants her to give it out to company clients for the same reason. So far she has said "no", and her boss told her this could lead to dismissal. And no, the company will not be paying any part of her cell phone bill, since it is her personal phone. (State of NJ, by the way, if that makes any difference.) hmmmm well she has a right to keep her cell phone number to herself. If this is a regular office job, then they should not ask for her cell phone # to call her off hours. I mean, after quittin time, they should not bother her at all. That's my belief I don't know if it's legal, but as long as the boss has phone number to contact her at (IE: home) he wouldn't need a cell phone. Have her check with her HR department I do not know if they can demand her cell phone number, but they can not require her to allow it to be given out to clients. sure, they can ask all they want. i believe the broken law part comes if they fail to get a good enough excuse when they fire her. yes, but depending on your job. if u just have a regular job working at a restaurant, then no, u shouldn't need to give it, but if u work someplace like as a cop or firefighter, then yes u might be required. She should see a lawyer. Now, how does her employer know she has a cell phone?????? |
