I'm thinking about becoming a medical transcriptionist....need advice!? |
Ok. I already have my own business (bookstore) but I'm interested in the idea of learning medical transcription so I could bring my work home with me. I am very familiar with medical terminolgy and I type fairly fast (60wpm) so does anyone in this field know where should I start? Any good books to recommend? Thank you! I was trained as a medical transcriptionist many years ago. If you feel your knowledge of medical terminology is adequate to qualify you to work as a medical transcriptionist; if your spelling is near perfect; your hearing and recognition of recorded words are very good, then you could begin to plan what you will be charging your clients for your work. At first, you could advertise your business by posting job notices at your local hospital, medical school, dental school, etc. in your area. At first, I would not take on more than a single piece of work at a time ... mainly just to see how long it takes you to finish. When you feel comfortable, take on 2 projects at a time, etc. until you learn your "comfort zone." You could possibly work on college thesis papers if you have a college or junior college close by that would help you in between projects. One of my friends did some on-line training which did not work out for her. She was not able to find a job.
