What is general office administration?

I would like to know about general office administration. what are the main jobs of office administration? And area of Administration?

Thanks

The answer depends on the size of the company. For mid sized companies, the person is a jack of all trades - here's a general list of duties

sits near the front door
answers the phone
answers the phone for key execs when they're not in
delivers the mail
routes incoming faxes
handles meetings within the office
coordinates travel schedules for key execs
restocks the paper, supplies, envelopes, etc
refills the copiers with paper and makes sure toner is on hand
orders lunch for key execs when needed
other ad hoc duties such as wirting letters, some small spreadsheet work and powerpoint presentations

The pay will range, depending on the size of the company and the level of admin work required, between $10 and hour up to $25 and hour . . . good luck!
A business looking for a "general office admin" will not pay $25/hour. That salary usually is paid to a high level Executive or Administrative Assistant with at least 5-8 years (give or take a few years) of experience. Those are also the people usually asked to get lunch, do special projects, computer work, deal with clients.

General office admin is someone to file, copy, answer the phones, greet people in the reception area and that's pretty much it. You will be paid anywhere from $8 to $12 an hour. Closer to $8 if you don't type and just answer phones and file.

Depending on if and how fast you type, if you know and how much you know ab out computer programs, you will be paid more and more.

To get experience being a receiptionist or an administrative assistant, you should sign up with some temp agencies. They usually have computer tutorials free to you to use to learn how to type (or to practice to get your typing speed up) and learn new computer programs. You should expect to have to learn Microsoft Office Word and Excel. If you know PowerPoint (which is a very easy presentation program) you will be paid even more.

Good Luck
I was a staffing coordinator for years and I have been an Executive Assistant and an Administrative Assistant for over 11 years.
They do all the crappy miscellaneous work the higher level people in the office wont do or don't have time to do.
Entry level. If you are working in a large bank with a big back office, frequently you check loan applications, etc for accuracy. You call customers if there is a problem with the info provided. You do data entry. If they want to cash in their mutual funds, you do this for them and deduct applicable taxes, etc.
The front line staff gets the credit with the customers for the work you do "behind the scenes."
I agree totally with the first answer, thought the salary range he listed is a on the high side, unless you are in a metro area. A little bit of everything, and can be in different areas or dept's like accting, purchasing, shipping, within any given industry.
