Temp Agency Being Dishonest With Me? |
I've dealt with this employment agency before and they are located here in NYC. The lady I dealt with told me that there is a position that popped up at a law firm, that it is a long-term assignment, yet she put a time limit on it (4 weeks). She then asked me how long can I commit to the assignment and can I do the 4 weeks. Now, if an assignment is LONG-TERM, why is the time limit 4 WEEKS applied here? She also told me that if I were to find another permanent job, that I would have to give her and her client up to 2 weeks notice. For what? There is no real commitment here, I'm a temp, despite the fact that it is a long-term assignment. Anyway I took on the assignment because I needed the money. I called her today to tell her that another job hired me permanent and they want me to start tomorrow. She got pissed off and went back on our convo about giving in 2 weeks notice. I quit the assignment today and said to "f*** it". Is she being greedy, pushy, and dishonest with me? The temp agency doesn't sound very reputable. The agency should be very used to people having to quit abruptly as many people that temp are actually looking for a job. I'm not sure why you suggested that she was being "greedy" though. Even at permanent employment nowadays, unless you are in an upper management position, a two-week notice is rarely heard of anymore. Also, it's bizarre that it was a 4-week "long-term" temp job and she asked you for a 2-week notice. That's ridiculous. Additionally, tell her a "long-term" assignment in the temp agency business is 3 months or longer...not 4 weeks. If she tries to hold your check for the days you worked because she said you went back on your word about staying the 4 weeks, reminder her that New York is an "employment at will" state and you (or she) can terminate the employment at any time for any reason (or for no reason) unless it is because of your race, religion, or gender. If she still doesn't give you your check, call a lawyer. I hope it doesn't come to that. Good Luck at your new job!!! Source(s): I was a staffing coordinator in several different industries. Sounds like she sold you a wolf ticket about it not being long-term and then tried to change her story when you got wise... Don't trust her dude, she's being all of the above. No, she is doing as requested by the employer. They devote time and training to you for the position. You WERE asked in advance about this... no surprise here. You took it for face value, now you appear disreputable in their eyes. Don't try going back there if things don't work out. Nobody likes a 'quitter'... and you did. Not mean, just honest. long term, means long term, dont give up : ) Good question! A lot of temp agencies try to jerk you around because they know that you are a reliable worker and that you need the money. It seems that if you are a good worker, that they would try to comply with you and keep you. Go figure! I am so glad that you got another full time, permanent job elsewhere! Don't be surprised if they call you back and offer you more because once a company knows that they can rely on you, they will do almost anything to keep you. Some companies count on the temp agency to do the weeding out for them of employees with bad histories, etc. Plus as an employee of the temp agency, they cover workers comp, medical, dental, etc. It's not cheap for the company go to through a temp agency but it's less paperwork, hassle, etc. Then if you work out, they can hire you on perm. The problem is so many temp agencies are really bad to their employees. There's a couple where I live that I wouldn't let walk in the door of my office! |
