What would be the operational tasks of being a retail manager??

Employee training and scheduling, inventory monitoring, daily and monthly paperwork, controlling expenses to assure store growth and profit Source(s): 22 years in retail mgmnt
along with the tasks listed by mudbug depending on the size of the retail establishment ( is it a 7-11? a Walmart? something in between?) you'd probably have to get involved with cash management, accounting, accounts payable and receivable and know your way around a balance sheet a bit.
Same as above answers, plus lots of customer service work and stocking, stocking, stocking of merchandise!!! You must be good with customers!
5+ years as a supervisor and assistant manager in 3 retail stores
All of above PLUS you must remember that depending on the hours and size of the establishment, you may be working odd hours, have to fill in if someone doesn't show or calls in (which is common in alot of retail settings), and you may not have a set Mon-Fri schedule. Sometimes you'll have to open, close, work midday, or even overnight if the place is open 24 hours. I am not trying to be negative, I have just worked in retail management and certain places have a high turn over with reasons being given like, "I hardly see my kids/husband/wife." and "I have a hard time planning anything because I never know when I will have to work very far in advance." Plus, you need to know if the job is a salaried position or hourly, and if it is salaried, be sure and have an idea as to the hours they are expecting you to put in weekly. It can be quite discouraging working 65 hours a week and getting paid a set amount, and having a friend that gets paid hourly who works 45 hrs a week and that friend makes what you do. Just have a list of questions ready.
