Will I get to be the controller??? Please read, need advice? |
I accepted a job at a local dealership as an accountant. The pay is $35,000 to start & I have to work Monday thru Friday, 8-6, & every other Saturday 10-5. When I interviewed with the current controller & her boss, they explained that I would eventually take over the current controller's position. However, I have been there two weeks, & I have ascertained that the current controller is a TOTAL CONTROL FREAK. She has wanted me to do deposits, book deals, etc, basically the stuff the clerk does. She refuses to show me anything she does on a daily basis. Now I realize I have been there only two weeks, but I have worked for a dealership before doing the same thing. She also set up the accounting system & it must be followed EXACTLY as she has it. She lets me know daily mistakes I have made. I really do not think this lady will leave & if she does, is she going to give me autonomy or micro manage me? I think the job gives her purpose & also did I mention she is the gf of the owner?? Advice? If you want to stay in the company, make her feel that you don't want her job. She might relax on you a little bit. The way I see it though, it is better to look for greener pastures. It is very unlikely that she will relinquish her post. Peace and blessings! You will never be the controller, send out resumes you may never need to have this on a resume if you don't keep the job much longer land a job then give two weeks notice. If anyone ask tell them the job just wasn't what you expected. Two weeks seem to be a rather short period of time form an opinion on what your future assignments will me. It takes time to start training someone in a new position. it appears to me what task she has assigned you, that the work was just dumped on you without any instruction on "how they do it". You have an advantage over her, in having recent experience in how another dealership handles their "accounting procedures". You have discover that accounting procedures vary between businesses in the same industry. Consider giving it a few more weeks, if there have not been any moves to training you for even the position of assistant controller, then it time to start looking elsewhere. You did not state if in the interview the reason why this position would become open or when? They may have meant a year or more in the future. Or it may have been just a carrot to get your commitment. Also, you did not state if the interview with the current controller and her boss was a join meeting.
