Can I expect a pay increase with a new AA degree? |
I am a very experienced Admin Assist, working towards my BS, but I recently earned my AA and was wondering can that earn me more money? Or is my AA just a 'no increase in pay' stepping stone? i would bring it to my managers attention but i would not count of an pay increase == degrees are find don't get me wrong but if you had the skills to do the job you are doing now with out it why should the company increase your salary == look around the office and try to think of some say to save the company big bucks -- that will really get their attention Degrees in and of themselves don't normally justify an in increase in pay. It doesn't matter if the degree is a AA, BS, MS or even PhD. As you get more and more education, your increased knowledge and skills should allow you to be more valuable to your employer, and this is what earns you a raise, not the degree. But the job you are in has to be able to effectively use the skills that you have. There is an upper salary cap on most positions, regardless of your education. At some point, you will become overqualified for your present position and will need to move on to earn more money. Some jobs, particularly in the public sector, do make having a certain type of degree mandatory in order to move up to the next level. However, in the private sector, a person's ability to be productive and generate revenue for the company is usually far more important than the types of degrees that he or she has. This is not to say that education is not important - it is, but your shouldn't think of your degree as a "ticket" that automatically allows you to move up to the next level. I really would not count on receiving a pay increase with an associates degree. I believe once you finish your bachelors that is when you should begin to market yourself by applying for jobs in which you qualify for and will receive a pay increase for. You know? However, if you have a lot of experience in the administrative arena now...do not wait until you finish your bachelors...start looking now, if it is feasible for you. I would let them know you just got an AA degree. If it doesn't make a differfence in your pay, then, time to move on. Don't expect a raise next pay, it might not be until your regular review time, but if your co doesn't place any added value on an AA, there are those who will. Good luck! I have an associates in business, and i am working as a receptionist, to get my foot in the door. Just keep working and learning. It will work out in the end. It really depends on the Company. A Financial Company (I work for) is bonus-driven and will look at any degrees you make (with the thought that you will continue) and usually, it should be in the field they are looking for (i.e. business, finance etc). An AA degree will probably not get a lot of notice, but if you use it as a stepping stone to a BA, it will work to your benefit. Usually, most company will increase your salary with an MBA degree. In this type of business, admins do not make a lot of money with the exception of a BA combined with working with a senior executive (President, CEO, Chairman) will net you more money. If you have the expertise & experience, you can make $70K or higher. The way budgets are with the larger companies these days, I would not have any expectations in this area. Once you receive your job, you'll get continuous raises, based on your performance. It also will depend on the company you work with. These days, however, they are watching departmental budgets and Expenses in a huge way. Good luck |
