Secretary problem....again? |
I run a company, I only report to the owner of the company when needed. It came to my attention that my secretary has befriended the owner outside work hours and allowes herself to reports on me. How should I handle this? I am not quitting my job. Thanks Well a frank conversation with the owner, on this problem would be the first thing. It is completely out of line to have a subordinate 'spying' on you and it will (if it hasn't already) affect your role/position as her boss. If they are truely friends outside of work, there is little you can do to stop it, outside firing her, which considering who her friends are might not be possible either. If you haven't done anything wrong, then don't worry about it because there will be no trouble for you. Mention it to her that you find it disrespectful to do that. Or fire her. Keep your mouth shut, do your job or you will find it belongs to your secretary. Don't do anything to be reported on and have a polite word to the owner saying he has entrusted you so far so could he please only refer to you and not talk about you to the secetary and you are upset by it... you sound like a valued employee so I can only assume the owner will listen to your concerns good luck what does your conscious tell you? sometimes self conscious alerts you from danger. Talk to her, tell her how you fill about her reporting to you. and tell her that your boss might not approve her reporting to you. and take from there. Talk with the owner and just tell them that you are uncomfortable with the situation. Since you say that you do not want to quit, you must have a decent working relationship with the owner. Make sure they are aware of your concerns so they will be able to recognize if your secretary is actually working the boss behind your back or not. You have to be careful, if you come off as to defensive, the owner may think you have something to hide. Good Luck, and remember, communication is the key. Peace! Considering your secretary has become close friends with the owner, I believe there is nothing you can do. You cannot go to HR, EO, Employee Relations, etc. I believe your best bet would be to not say anything that can be used against you. Ensure you always dot your i's and cross your t's. To be honest, the nature of their relationship is none of your business...in my opinion; therefore, there is nothing to handle. |
