How would a potential employer view this education and skills? |
I have an associates degree but am unable to return to school for my BA, but I am taking classes to gain more skills. Each class comes with a certificate of completion/competency. Classes include accounting, human resources fundamentals, medical office skills, etc. I also have MS Office Specialist certification as well as several other Microsoft and Adobe certifications. Would not having a BA count against me, if I were to apply for an entry to mid-level office position? I will be relocating as well. I know in the area I live right now, you need a BA in Accounting just to be an accounting clerk. What is it like in your area? I live in a rural area. This would fly in my area for a mid level staff person. What would fly even more is if you have any work experience to back it up. If not, it might be that you need to start entry level until you gain experience, but then the education would not hold you back at all. You have an associate degree. Period. Taking a bunch of other miscellaneous classes does not really matter in the applicant review process. You can't list a bunch of individual classes. Either get your BA or stick with what you have. Many employers will hire you with this education. You could mention the individual classes during an interview if some of them are applicable to the position for which you are applying. just taking courses is only one step. how are your skills? how is your attitude? how can you use the skills to help your employer? With qualifications like these, you should be in Consumer Relations or a recruiter for some large corporation.Better yet, apply with your State Attorney General's Office- Consumer Fraud Division. I would say you are definitely qualified to be an accounting clerk. Problem is an accounting clerk pays considerable less than a Junior or staff accountant. Your best bet without a doubt is to go back for your BA in accounting. I would recommend getting intermediate and advanced accounting and maybe Tax and Cost Accounting classes under your belt. Once you have these courses completed you become more marketable even if you haven't completed your BA. Just the fact that you are closing in on the BA is acceptable to many companies. The classes you have mentioned help a little, but i think if you are interested in Accounting, you must go after that BA and I would recommend sooner rather than later. Hope this helps. Good luck! |
