Why do some frown on male administrative assistants/receptionist/d... clerks...etc? |
I think this is so sexist!!! Actually, the frowns are coming from the wrong people. In the business world I've never found that to be a problem. For at least ten years, and as Afro-American male, I did freelance word-processing, secretarial, administrative assistant, executive secretary, for some of the best corporations on Wilshire Boulevard, working through temp agencies and never encountered sexism, racism, or any such nonsense. It's always been such that if you can really do the job, you won't have many problems. And, no, I'm not gay. For the same reason some people frown on male nurses - it is not a traditional male role. Because they are sexist people who think clerical positions are for women only. It is sexist, in my opinion...... but many feel that that's a easy woman's job that men shouldn't be doing.......... That is for sure. It's like the one's who "frown" on male nurses. I like having a diverse group to work with. Just because a guy is working in a field that is typically for females does not mean they are gay. There shouldn't be a line drawn between male jobs and female jobs. I work for a women owned minority business and am definately one of the several token males... But, one of the owners has a male assistant (guy friday) and they get along just fine. I see no problem with it... However (I hope he isn't on Y!A) he has been called, " The Whipping Boy"... Too funny. Historically (google the figures if you so choose) those positions have been held by women. As such, there are individuals who will stereotype such positions, in that, they should be not worked by men. This perception is slowly changing thankfully as the imbalance between male and female professionals even out in fields that have worked by predominantly one gender. |
