Tomorrow will be the 1st time I've worked in a professional level position in almost 4 years. Any advice? |
Tomorrow I start a professional-level HR position. I have not worked in an office in almost 4 years, so I'm nervous. I have the experience, so I'm not worried about the technical issues, just in making sure that I get along with my co-workers. Any advice in terms of getting to break the ice? (I'm covering for a maternity leave, so this is only a temp position for a few months). I've heard there are new rules to the office etiquette? Any suggestions? I'm in my 40s and married, so I just want to make sure I do an excellent job for them. A good blog with job tips is Careerkit.blogspot.com That's the blog of the career consultant firm of learntosucceed.biz Just go with the flow. Crack a few jokes. Just be yourself. Be friendly but not overbearing. When you are introduced, smile and make a nice comment or compliment about something. Refrain from talking about "how we used to do it." When in doubt about something, ask. Good Luck--You will feel comfortable in no time. It's not so much that the rules have changed, but working environments have. Cubicle setups are much more common which means no privacy for you or your co-workers so discretion is critical. You just have to learn to tune them out. If it's allowed, an iPod could save your sanity (it has mine). Been there, done that. Starting a 'new' job can be exciting - and a bit nerve-wracking. In addition to having to master new tasks and understand new procedures, you'll have to navigate an often complex social network that exists at the company. Act friendly at all times, even if you're feeling frazzled from all the new information you're trying to process. Be inquisitive with your coworkers. Make small talk about popular television shows ("Did anyone watch 'The Office' last night?") or sporting events to spark conversations that are cordial without being too personal. Keep your personal business to yourself. Be a listener and check out the "layout' before making suggestions.
