Should I go back ?

I went on a maternity leave for an uncertain time period. i just wasnt sure when i would be ready to come back to work again. before i left, my boss hired someone and requested that i should teach her before i leave, i did so. I worked for 7 years in this company and started as a receptionist and worked my way up to my current position. I know that my boss was 100 % satisfied. He still wants me to come back and he promises to offer me another position. I asked if he could give me back my old position and I didnt get a straight answer, most probably he couldnt since he hired the other girl. He does not tell me the title of my new postion but just tells me of a few duties that i would be doing and he says whats the big deal, i will get paid the same way. After having worked there for 7 years and gained a lot of respect I dont want to go back and do some itsy bitsy work position. I dont know what to do. should i go back or should i apply elsewhere? please help

If he is offering you something comparable, then you should go back. He cannot fire the person who replaced you just to open that specific position for you to come back to. Once you get back, then you can be in line for the next "better" position or perhaps a promotion.
I'm pretty certain that since you did take maternity leave you are entitled to the job you had when you went on maternity leave. I'd tell him straight out, that if you don't get the job you had when you went on maternity leave that you will have no problem leaving the company permanently.
Sounds like he may be happy with the new person. I would plan to go back and get a feel for what the new position is like. And at the same time you can look elsewhere. I would just cover all your bases. You never know, something wonderful could come your way at the right moment. Congratulations of the baby!
You should go back and then if you are not satisfied with your position let him know that you think that it's not fair to punish you for leaving to have a child. Then if you are still not satisfied, look for another job.
ask him to be more specific about your responsibilities with this "new" position then make up your mind
