Taking on a management position... Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? |
- I'm a new college graduate... :) I'm up for a position as a record manager (because of my degree and past "small family business" management experience). Plus, I knew somebody who knew somebody. Anyway, I was told I will be archiving documents (or maintaining it) and managing 3 others and I will also maintain documents when new policies arrise. Anyway, Is this very hard? I know "hard" is relative... But what will I REALLY be doing? Please gIve me an example of "a day in the life" as a records manager. Thanks for your help ...! I want actual answers... please real answers only! Thanks Again... You are young, and you will be "tested." About 75% of your time will be spent handling personnel issues. Your staff will have a watchful eye and will be pushing your buttons, questioning your supervisory abilities and your knowledge. They will be late, call in sick, take extended breaks until such time that you can prove and demonstrate that you are fair in your treatment and interaction with them. And if you can't answer a question right when asked, don't just give an answer for an answer's sake. Tell the employee you will investigate and get right back to him or her. Then, find the appropriate resource to find the answer - and don't fail to get back to the employee with the answer. This will show that you are a good problem solver, building trust within the office. 25% of your time will be performing duties of records management and planning and prioritizing tasks. You are responsible for getting all the work done through your staff as well. It will probably be a fast paced, demanding job with little recognition. You will be over seeing the coding, filing and retrieval of documents and files. People will want their needed document NOW and they won't return it until you hunt them down like a dog when the next person needs it. No one will thank you or your team but they will blame you when they don't meet a deadline or complete a project..."records didn't supply the needed documents or records couldn't find my file, I know it's there or I returned that file a week ago......" Your staff will be poorly paid, over stressed, burned out, cynical and with very low morale. You are kind of like the guy who cleans the instruments in an operating room. Nobody thanks him when every thing is right where it should be sterile, well maintained and ready to go. But let there be just one forecep look like it is out of place by 1/2 an inch and there is hell to pay. Well you have to start somewhere. i think u can do anything what is ask of u.. job wise that is... they won't hire u in the first place if they think u're not capable of handling the job thats being offered to you... the best thing for you 2do is to concentrate in your job... do it as best as u can.. and for sure.. sooner or later u'll be climbing those ladders... |
