Why do they not call when they say that they will? |
This is to all of you HR or hiring managers out there. Why is it that when you go on a job interview and you ask the prospective employer will you let me know either way if I have the job or not they say yes and then never call you again? I just spent 3 weeks between phone calls, 3 interviews and one assesment test with a potential employer and was told that I will call you tomorrow which was 8/30 with our decision, and have not heard from them yet. I placed a call to ask the initial person that I interviewed with on 8/31 and was told that her and one of the owners that I interviewed with were in a meeting and got her voice mail. Which by the way she gave me her cell phone number to call her over the weekend if I needed to change my 2nd interview with the company. I did not receive a return call. I just do not understand why employers will not tell you that you do not have the job? Or is it a possibilty that they have not made that decision yet? If so why not tell me that? I am not HR but I know from experience they put you off. I once had interviewed at a law firm for an office job. I got a first interview. They said they liked me so I was called for a second interview. They said they wanted me to meet another partner so I got a THIRD interview. They were acting the whole time like they were so interested in me and I had three interviews and missed work for all of them thinking this was my ticket out. Then all of a sudden nothing....no calls. A week went by and I called the interviewer. Left a voice mail. Got a letter in the mail a week later...sorry blah blah blah....They do crap like that and it sucks! I'm not either in HR or a hiring manager, but the job that I'm currently working at didn't call anyone else they were interviewing until I agreed and came to work. Another job I was applying for took about 2-3 months fo me calling until I found out they transfered someone within the company to fill the position. Or possibly they say the company doesn't want a potential confrontation. Could be any number of things, depending on the company or the person doing the hiring.. Personal Experience Three possible reasons: Sometimes, they're waiting to hear decision from a person or a dept. that makes the next decision, and they don't want to call you and say "we still don't know, the boss is out of town and we're waiting for him/her to return from the trip" There are a lot of applicants and they don't make the time to call candidates. This is just an excuse, and it isn't right, but that's what I've heard people say as their reason for not calling. Often it's simply that people hate to give bad news if an applicant isn't chosen. Yes, it's very inconsiderate but that's sometimes the reason. In the past employers were more courteous and professional. it was more common for employers to call with an update, even if they said there was a delay, or they decided to do another round of interviews etc. The reason HR people say they call and they don't is because they don't want to be the bad guy and they don't want to deal with any kind of negative emotions. What I mean is this: Look at all the post office shootings there have been lately. This kind of negative activities really scare HR people. They don't want to anger anyone, or hurt anyone's feelings. They don't want tears, or an argument on why you should hire them. If they tell you they might call, then they are seriously considering you for the position. If they don't call, they've either found someone more suitable and dread a confrontation, or they just get really busy running their business and forget to call everyone. Honestly, don't take it personally. Take it as a sign that you were good enough for consideration, but that the job may not have suited you perfectly. Lastly, I remember I kept trying to get hired at this publishing company because I knew someone who worked there. The same thing kept happening to me. Finally, I asked the person who worked there to ask why I hadn't received a call back. The HR person's response was, "She (meaning me)never called me back." Apparently, she had assumed that I would contact her again if I really wanted the job, and I'd had no clue. So, if you really want a job and they've said they will call you back but they don't, feel free to call back and ask for input. If the person isn't available to give you an answer, see if their assistant knows the answer. If you leave a message and they still don't call you back, they aren't interested and there's something better for you out there. (Just FYI, I now run my own business and absolutely LOVE it.) Hope this helps. it is sometimes torture to hear the truth and it pains to hear a lie. Don't ever expect a potential employer to call you back; they rarely do. Also if they are truly interested in you they will tell you right away; if they say they have to interview other candidates, you already lost the job. Sometimes you will get a letter or email, but that is rare too. |
