What kind of jobs do english graduates (or similar grads) get straight out of uni? |
I am an English Graduate and have been unemployed for a while, I desperately need a job, I only really have retail experience but dont want to work in retail...whats the best kind of job to go for with very little experience? I need to get working and make my way somehow in this world. What do other grads do? please - no mc donalds jokes. Thank you. What's wrong with retail? I was a social science major and after some playing in Asia returned to the USA to the cashier job I had during college. I moved quickly into management, put in about 18 months, then got a great job which combines my sales and management experience. Without that retail experience, I would NOT have my current job. Retail teaches you how to make people do what you want them to do (customers and associates), how to deal with the extremes of humanity, from the entitled rich snobs to the poor dumb guy who can't figure out how to open the box to the high school kids' pranks to the ancient customers' lack of speed. You learn patience, the ability to hold your tongue when dealing with obnoxious people, more or less how to read between the lines when interviewing in order to hire the best possible people, and a lot of other people skills that university doesn't necessarily prepare you for. Besides, it's better than being unemployed. Writing, proofreading or editing for a newspaper or publishing house (books or magazines). I have known people to work at the library because they know their literature. Public relations, advertising or broadcasting... Producing and writing scripts for radio or television. Teaching. Technical writing for high-tech industries Communications Assistant Greeting card writer Writing speeches for politicians, business persons, etc Book critic Novel writer, playwright, poet, sportswriter, reporter, etc. http://www.amazon.com/great-jobs-english... http://www.englishlanguagejobs.com/... |
