Word Processing question for you...? |
In a professional setting, when typing a phone number, is it acceptable to type the number like this: 123.456.7890 or like this 123-456-7890? My friend, who happens to be a really trendy person always does the dots. I was always instructed to use the dashes. Which one is more professional? Any ideas or comments on this one? Well, it's simple, really. The European way (though contrary to popular belief here...) is not to use dots, but to use spaces. Ex: 011 986 32105 The North American way is one or the other: (419) 327-4567 OR 656-123-4566 The dots are actually relatively new and developed around the dot.com era... 416.456.6677 Nowadays, all of the above are acceptable, though most young, trendy companies will be seen using the dots and companies that have been around longer or are more conservative will be using the others. That being said, it is accepted to use all of the above for any company. There is however, one very important rule: WHATEVER YOU DECIDE TO USE, BE CONSISTENT ABOUT IT! That means if you use dots in your letterhead, when you need to do a telephone number in the text of the letter, stay with the dots there too. Use dots in ALL telephone numbers you transcribe, be it in correspondance, business cards, letterhead, etc. Consistency and focus should be at the heart of any professional setting. The dots are a European convention, and are not usually used in the U.S. For someone accustomed to the U.S. convention it can be confusing. Use either a dash, or a space if you are typing for an audience in the U.S. I think either is fine... i generally use (123) 456-7890 but I have seen company letter head with dashes or dots... How about no dot or dashes? Tel: 123 456 7890 both are acceptable. the dots are european -while dashes are american. i would suggest if there is more than you doing typing...everyone be consistant. good luck :) There should be an office standard. Everyone should do the same thing. Either dots or dashes or nothing. What is on the company letterhead should be the norm, but there must be consistancy I like the dots but some people may find it confusing because its different. I say use whatever you want. I like using the dots. |
