Is it ok to sell legal advice online? Do you have to pay tax or is it a hobby?


Can I get into trouble for selling legal advice online? I am qualified. Am I allowed to go around posting on different sites and charging people? I would especially like to hear from other people who do similar things. Thanks

If you earned big amount of money, I think the revenue officer will run after you.
As a lawyer, I will answer that only lawyers can sell legal advice, and even then can only sell it in states in which they are licensed by that state's bar association or supreme court. I can't say for every state, but in most states there is no sales tax on legal advice; but everything a lawyer earns is taxed as income one way or another.
Just what do you mean by "qualified". Qualified to give legal advice? Do you have a legal degree? If not, you cannot be giving out legal advice online or otherwise without a law degree. As far as any income is concerned, IRS Code Section 61 defines income from any and all sources so it must be reported to the IRS on your tax return.

There is nothing inherently wrong with what your suggesting but you should investigate an licensing requirements as well as potential liability for any possible bad advice you may provide. This could be a serious problem.
