I moved to the UK from Australia in 1998. I am now a dual UK/AUS citizen and I currently work through a UK based agency as a hydrographic surveyor. On average, I work one month on and one off at various international locations offshore. I pay taxes on all my earnings in the UK, but because I work 183+ days per year I can claim back 100% taxes in the UK under the seafarers deduction scheme.
If I return to Australia, do I necessarily need to claim residency for tax purposes? I'm just interested because I have returned to Australia previously for holidays etc and can't remember whether I had to declare residency or not. As you can imagine it would be ideal if I could continue to pay my taxes in the UK and claim them back eventually rather than pay taxes to the ATO and never see them again. Unfortunately the Australian government doesn't seem to want to support it's seafarers, so the answer to this question could be the deciding factor on my return!
