Should a full time Canadian college student, on government issued student loan, do his/her taxes? |
The person is not working, lives with his/her parents, never gets the tax forms from the government. Should he/she do her taxes? The person should do it for the several reasons, including the following: to claim the GST rebate, to claim any provincial rebates (I think Ontario still has a $100 sales tax rebate), and if they have no income, they can carry forward their tution deductions to future years where they will have income. CRA not sending a tax form means nothing, it just means they don't know where to find you. Source(s): I'm a former CRA employee Regrettably, the answer is....yes. If for no other reason, doing your taxes will allow you to show the Canadian Government - or, more importantly, their revenue unit - that your income is actually subsidized financial aid and (therefore) not taxable income at this time. It'll keep you out of hot water later on, especially if they decide to ask you why you *didn't* file the paperwork like you're supposed to do. |
