Who will pay gst if you sell a house? |
Who will pay gst if you sell a house? No GST collectible on sales of non-new dwellings, so nobody pays it. Of course, if there *were*, the buyer ALWAYS pays the GST - those stores with the sales that state that "no GST" are actually breaking the laws by making those claims. Oh, I almost forgot - there is GST payable on the Real Estate Agent's commission. As the *seller* pays the agent, the seller is responsible for paying this. The logic here is that the seller of the house is purchasing a service from the agent (the service of selling the house), so in this case the house seller is responsible for the GST on the commisssion. The goods and Services Tax replaced Federal Sales Tax in 1991. Although the tax is collected at a rate of 7% on the sale price of goods and services, it doesn't apply to every type of home or every form of real estate service. New home purchases are subject to GST but may qualify for a GST rebate. Resale homes are sold exempt from GST. http://www.canadamortgages.com/gstinfo.h... the buyer will pay |
