Canadian Government, how dare you charge taxes on goods that weren't purchased in your country?

I'm an American woman who recently married a Canadian man, and am presently living in Canada.

Recently, I placed an order for a winter coat from a clothing company in the UNITED STATES. This was a purchase for MY PERSONAL USE and have no commercial use for it. I would have been happy to buy the coat in Canada, but unfortunately no Canadian stores carry the type of coat I wanted. I had it shipped by UPS.

Weeks after I receive my coat, I get a bill from UPS charging me CANADIAN duties, as well as the PST and GST. HOW DARE THEY? That's nothing more than EXTORTION, and I'm NOT going to pay it. The bill may be under $20, but there is a principle here. If I have to turn this into an international incident, I WILL!!!

I'm not Canadian, and CANADA had nothing to do with the business interaction. In other words, CANADA can kiss my you-know-what!

Most of the answers here are uncalled for. Most of you may be used to being taxed to death and have been brainwashed to accept it without complaint.

Unlike most of you, Americans do know how to fight for what's right.... and to stand up to what's wrong and if you really think about it, this is a UNIVERSAL issue, not a US or Canadian issue.

So there is no use in saying "Americans get out of here", like Underdog pointed out. Where would your society be without US? I've been in Canada, and everything there is American: The cars that are driven, the stores you shop in, the restaurants you eat in, etc. If you were blindfolded in the US and driven to Canada without your knowledge, if they remove the Canadian flags, you wouldn't know you're not in the US anymore. Canada is nothing more than an extension of the US. The only difference is that you don't have nearly the power over your government as we do over ours, and that's a beautiful thing, if you ask me.
Thanks for letting us know. Get back in touch when you know the visiting times for your prison cell.
Hint: The entire f*cking Canadian government doesn't surf Yahoo answers.

It costs money to send something from America into Canada, you freaking genius.
Mail order, catalog & internet sales are considered sold in the location (state, city, country) that the ORDERER is in at the time of order.

You won't be fighting the Canadian government, or the American either. UPS billed you, UPS will turn you over to collections, UPS will ruin your credit over this little bill. UPS already paid the tax to Canada. Look, I'm no fan of UPS, but in this instance, why shoud UPS have to pay the tax and not be reimbursed by the person who has gained the value of the shipment (you).

If the American company charged you sales tax, you should be able to apply to the Canadian tax agency for a refund of that amount, thus reducing your total tax payout.

This is just the way it is. My company ships to Canada nearly everyday, and all the duties and import taxes are paid by the RECEIVER. We (and the company you ordered from) would not ship ANYTHING to Canada if the receiver refused to pay the taxes.
I'm with you on frivolous taxation. My biggest pet peeve is the state sales tax. The state gets sales tax each time a car is sold... no matter how many times it is sold. While we're at it... how about property tax? You buy your property, pay it off, miss a few property tax bills and they take YOUR property away from you even though you've paid for it. Then there's alway gasoline tax. You add to the price of gasoline federal and state tax... okay, no biggie. Then you charge state sales tax on top of those two taxes. I thought taxing taxes was illegal. No wonder we have to work until mid-May just to pay our taxes.
We Canadians have a saying. It's "I'm Canadian, tax me!" If you don't like it, take your violence ridden American mentality and move back across the border. We don't want it here.
