What is an autocratic management style?

Autocratic management style means there is one boss who makes all the decisions. It is a old school mentality, and modern managers are moving away from it.

The previous answer is an example of what can go wrong with managers of this type, and although far too common does not always happen. That is more of an abuse of the power rather than a reflection of autocracy. In a lot of situations managers abusing their position are considered to be autocrats, where really they are just a**holes.
The worst kind as far as I am concerned. It creates poor morale and thus deceases productivity and employee retention. It is known as the "Hard Approach" management style. In other words use of threats and strict punichment to influence employees. Real old school style of management. Scholars will argue that it is very successful...but that is based on their theories and not action results.

I truely believe you will gain much more with a happy work force and retain your employees for the long haul. Employees are human beings just like everybody else... treat them that way.
