Sales opportunity vs lead?

dear mates, i'm confused about the difference between sales opportunity and lead...in siebel documents, authors said YOU CAN CONVERT LEAD TO SALES OPPORTUNITY FASTER THAN USUAL WITH CRM. but I asked many people, they told me there's no difference between the two terms.

could you help me answer this question?

Thanks a lot!

A sales opportunity is usually a qualified lead who is ready to buy and/or meet certain sales criteria. What I mean is that a lead does not necessarily have the same qualifications as a sales opportunity. In some cases, a sales opportunity is referred to as a hot lead.
ask zig zigular, the answer is a lead is just a lead until the rep makes it a sale, key words REP and MAKES
