Why Google is Microsoft rival but Microsoft is not Google rival?

Why Google is Microsoft rival but Microsoft is not Google rival?

Google is starting to move into the market that has been dominated by Microsoft (web mail and other online services). Google is doing this with superior software and applications so there is not too much stuff that Microsoft does better that Google that Google is trying to do.
Make sense?
Guess those is in the pole position is alway a rival to everybody....it all depends of the market shares or popularity as the rivalry might be overturned. In microsoft (MSN) vs google case...I seriously doubt so... Yahoo might have a better chances against Google but not in search engine by in localization and user-friendliness and mail services.
However, I don't see the rivalry between both corporate will be prolonged as future collabration between both might make even better wave of information technologies to human race...what google has is wider user pool, what microsoft has is perhaps a great envisions to software integration to human life...What if both combined?!
Till only a few years back , Google was primarily dependent on its Search Engine and a few more things . But now it has moved into a few more things :

1) Online Doc and Spreadsheet Utility - as a sort of rival to MS-OFFICE.
2) Google Mail - Rival to MSN and Hotmail.
3) Orkut can also be seen as a rival to MSN - though not directly.

And it is also bringing up a Repository where one can search Actual Live Projects' Source Codes .

But Microsoft 's search Engine hasn't been much popular and never posed threat to Google .
The other answers are good, but just another thought: at one time, Microsoft was growing so fast it was mind-blowing. Not that they're poor now by any means, but the rate at which they're growing has vastly decreased and now they're becoming more of the typical old "established" corporation.

Google is now that up-and-comer, with crazy growth, hiring sprees and more money than they can spend.

In other words, Microsoft is "out" and Google is "in". Google basically stole the spotlight from Microsoft.

Also, a lot of people are suggesting that Google's strategy is to change the nature of computing so much that Microsoft (at least their PC software and OS business) effectively becomes obsolete. They are doing this by making the computing experience more web-centric. Think about it: if you could do everything (email, music, video, documents, presentations, spreadsheets) through the web, why would you ever need to buy any of Microsoft's products?

Google is slowly moving in on Microsoft's "bread and butter".

On the other hand, Google's "bread and butter"---online search and advertising, is currently not at all threatened by Microsoft, whose offerings in this space are pretty lousy in comparison.
