California: Where do I find information on filing a Fictitious business name (DBA)? |
I've created my corporation in the state of California. I've also purchased a franchise under this corporation. The name of my corporation is completely different from the franchise name and I'd like to use the franchise name as well. Mostly in cases where my customers would write checks to me, they'd simply make it out to the franchise name. My customers wouldnt even know that a corporation exist. I think that I should file a Fictitious Business Name form with the county I do business in, but I am not sure. Also, as a side question, what if someone else is already using the name I want already in the county? There is more than one franchise in my county. Will I be able to use that same name? Thanks in advance. In California filing DBA is done with the county in which you reside. I don't recall which office but start with the assessor. It is unwise to use the same name if you are in the same business. Among the reasons are confusing customers, getting blamed for bad practices of the other party, and being sued by the earlier owner. Be more creative! |
