Self improvement books for new manager? |
I am a new manager in one of the big corporations in Silicon Valley. I am looking for some books on management or leadership for self improvement purpose. Anybody have any good recommendation? You will find the book, From Good to Great, by Jim Collins not only helpful for self-improvement but also for assessing your department and employees as well. It is not full of cliche's and it emphasizes strength based skills and strategies for achievement and profitability. The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli. Whatever you do don't just read corporate self help manuals or you'll end up sounding like every other drone in the company. Read a wide variety of historical and classical stuff and apply the lessons learned to your everyday activities. I wish I could tell you that it is easy to become a good manager in a hurry . It takes time and you learn as you go on. I have been a manager for over 30 yeras and am still learning. The best advice I can give you is be yourself , show the talent that put you in management in the first place and treat people as you would want to be treated yourself. saying this I can recommend one book which ,although very small, will give you the basics of managing people. It is " The One Minute Manager" by Kenneth Branchard . Although it is small it is packed with a good introductory approach . You can always study more detailed books as you go on in your career and when specific developmental needs arise. Good luck in your new career and most important enjoy yourself.
