What is the role of Automated teller machines in banks?

It is cheaper than hiring a real teller.
It's a non-human thing that doesn't have to listen to your crap. She just takes your money, hands out money and talks in a monotone voice. Oh, and she doesn't get paid, but she does get free room and board.
