Why do crossed Payable Orders take days to clear when the money has already been paid, unlike a cheque?

short answer - so the banks can make money by earning interest on it before they give it to you.
when i pay a crossed postal order into my bank it goes in as cleared funds straight away (just like you've paid cash in) my bank is Abbey
