Does your credit history transfer from Canada to USA or vice versa? |
I have recently immigrated and heard that my good credit history that I had in Canada does not apply here in the USA and that I will have to start from scratch. Anyone have any experience to know whether or not this is true? Can they not access my credit history through the Visa and Mastercard that I held in Canada? Credit reporting agencies such as Equifax, TransUnion, Northern Credit Bureaus and Equifax, and others only collect information from creditors about consumers鈥?financial experiences in a particular country and is seperate from other countries credit reporting agencies and vice versa. There are many reasons why credit reports do not transfer from one country to the next. The main reason behind this is because of differences in national laws. Every country, and the European Union, has its own laws governing credit reporting and information use. In addition to legal barriers, there are significant contractual complications around how businesses in other countries would access reports, report and update information and respond to consumer disputes. There also are a number of technical issues around how information is collected, stored and shared that further complicates transferring your credit report. Credit in the United States is based on our Social Security numbers. So I would guess the only way yours would be able to be transferred would be after you became a US citizen and get your Social Security number. After that you would have to contact all of the accounts you had in Canada and have them report to the credit bureaus in the U.S. Finance Manager for over 7-years. |
