How can I get a credit card?

Here's the situation. I'm an American living in Japan. I've been here for twelve years. I've finally decided to get back to the U.S. but in order to rent an apartment I need a credit card. Unfortunately, I don't have a bank account in the U.S. and all the credit card applications I've seen online seem to require "U.S. residency". Is it possible for me to get an American credit card from Japan? If so, how?

open a bank account and apply online for a best credit card according to your choice. So many types of credit card are available in market. If you want to get a american express credit card then try at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/ameri...
I suggest you apply online or through a bank dealing with such cards. My profile under credit has more information. There is no reason why you cannot get the card as there are providers who issue international credit cards.
Open a bank account asap for safety and to establish your residency.
You do have a SS# and your birth certificate right?
