Charge off on credit report? |
I had a BofA credit card. So we can be clear, I HATE BofA. When I had trouble paying the bill, I called in advance and they were not helpful to me. In any case, I simply couldn't afford to pay them, and being young I ignored them, for which I now pay the price. Last year, against my better judgment, I contacted BofA to pay the balance in full in exchange for removing the negative credit items. They responded to me by letter asking me to call them to discuss. I didn't want to speak with anymore 'helpful' BofA representatives, so I didn't respond. The next time I pulled my credit report, I saw that they reported my charge-off as SETTLED as of a month after my letter (Oct 06). They also added (had not been reported before) 120+ day late for every month between the originally charge-off (Aug03) and Oct06, which hurt my score. Can they do this? Any suggestion of how to make peace with BofA and actually help my credit? I'm right with ya on the BofA thing, although for banking reasons, not credit. They are too big and see everyone as a number not a person. Unfortunately I don't have much help for you. The only thing I can suggest is to call their credit department. Be all sugary sweet to them. I CAN tell you that angry customers, or someone who gives us collection people attitude don't get any more than the minimum amount of help. Find some nice person who wants to help you and explain your story. Offer to pay off the debt IF they REMOVE your account from the credit reporting agencies. And get it in writing. Good luck! Source(s): 7+ yrs Credit & Collections they can, and they will. specially banks like bof a.. I made one late payment, and they increase my 8% fixed credit rating to 24 %.... best thing to do it pay off the credit card. and not use it. its actually better to zero the card, then closing unless you have a better credit rating. its going to take some time off for yor score to get over that bad report.. but if you have another credit card, pay on time, never buy on credit, if you can't afford it, don't buy it. it comes back to haunt you later on. I learned all this the hard way. and go with a credit union, they are much better. don't worry about BofA, because it states SETTLED, you no longer have a legal debt with them but call them to confirm because BofA can later make a correction to your report. ask for a confirmation letter from them & send one yourself to them. if you're late & you paid less than the minimum, you can't change 120+ late payments and yes they can do this, because u were late those many days.. |
