Can you still be contacted about a debt if it was disputed and removed from your credit report? |
An account was opened in my name but with the wrong social. It was still placed on my credit report with a note about social security variation since the number the company was reporting with was very similiar to mine. I disputed the information and it was removed. However, I was still contacted by the company about payment. I was under the assumption that the credit bureau would only remove the information if they had proof that the item did not belong to me. What you describe are 2 different situations. The first deals with credit rating. Congrats on taking the time to look at your credit score and review your overall credit. This is how you caught the error and you were wisely able to remove that fraudulent card. The second item, though, deals with the credit card company - not a credit bureau. Let's say, for example, someone opened a Sears card in your name, but with the wrong social security number. They racked up purchases and, of course, never paid. While you removed that Sears card from your credit report, Sears may not be aware of this fraud. So they are contacting you to get payment. In this scenario, you would need to talk to the Sears credit agent to discuss just what you wrote here - that it was a fraudulent charge and account. Just be careful though... fraud like this doesn't bode well. Some may feel you created your own fake social security number just to commit fraud. Others may feel that it's someone close to you (like a friend or family member) who mostly knew your social security number, but was off by a digit or two. And there's also a chance you had bad luck in that your identity was stolen, but a touch of good luck in that the crook was stupid enough to get your social security wrong. Regardless, I would be careful now and start watching things closely (for any other fake transactions). Good luck! Tell the company it isn't you and forget it. You're not responsible. If they threaten, let them sue you...they'll get laughed out of court. If it was removed from your credit info. it should NOT be showing up anywhere. That debt should have been settled & not against you anymore. Make sure you get your social security number situation straightened out. I think that's where you're having the problem IF that is not correct, you're going to have problems in the future. Make sure that is corrected. Would it be worth cancelling that act. completely & opening a complete new one w/all the CORRECT info on it. This way there would be NO mistaken indentity... Can you still be contacted? Sure. You say it was removed from your credit report, but did you contact all 3 reporting companies? Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion all report that stuff, but they don't really intermingle their data. Once an item is removed from your credit report, it can be added back on if the company re-reports the debt as yours again. If the item has been removed but you are still getting contacted by the company that you do not have an account with then you need to talk with them and let them know that this is not your debt, you have already had it removed from your credit report as it is not yours and they need to rectify the situation on their end. If they do not and they continue to mess up your credit or contintue to call you that you are going to have to get an attorney for them to deal with. This should get them to correct the situation quickly. Good luck. The next time the company contacts you, tell them it was fraudulant and has been settled...if they still insist, tell them that you need their info so that your lawyer may get in touch with them. They will stop contacting you! |
