Anyone filed for bankruptcy after 2005? How was the experience? Are you glad you did it? Has your quality of? |
life improved? Would you recommend it to someone who has done her best, but thinks she's losing the fight? I did a chapter 7. I first went to a local bk lawyer the first week of April 2007. I gave him $600 to begin the process. The paperwork to fill out took me about 10 minutes. Within a week he called to tell me what phone number to call for credit counseling part 1. I spoke to a counselor for about 45 minutes on the phone. They just ask you everything about you, your lifestyle and your finances. They tell you to make a budget. I was told by them since a had limited finances this credit counseling would be free instead of $90. My lawyer received an email immediately with proof that I completed this part of the counseling. Within about 2 weeks of this I got a letter in the mail from the court giving me the time and date to go with my lawyer to see the judge. After getting this (called the first meeting of creditors), my lawyer told me to go to the web site of the credit counsuling company and read a short book about finances, budgets, etc. It took me 1 hour to read it. At the end of the reading a test followed. It was not a question of how many I got wrong, but they wanted to see what was needed to learn more about. (about 35 minutes on the phone with the counsuler again.) After this, my lawyer was emailed a copy of the completion certificate for this course. The day came about 5 weeks after my first meeting with my lawyer to go see the judge. The court was so far behind that I ended up sitting in court for 6 hours before they called my name. That was the worst 6 hours of my life, because I kept hearing about other peoples problems and how the judge try to manipulate the people to get the truth out. Many people left crying because they were trying to beat the system and they were getting caught in their own lies. Well to make a long story short, everything went smoothly, and you can't imagine the sigh of relief when he ended my turn. No creditors showed up to fight my case. In fact no creditors came for anybody in court that day. My quality of life has greatly improved because now instead of giving out money for nothing more than fees of the fees (never lowering my balance), I can actually buy real food for my kids. I can sleep at night. I don't cry anymore. It is like the biggest weight ever is lifted off me. Any questions you can e mail me at hansjill228@optonline.net. Good luck!! Source(s): Personal experience Hi. I would agree with the other responder. I am a bankruptcy paralegal and most if not all of our clients say that their quality of life has improved. Be encouraged. You will hear a lot of negative things about bankruptcy, but they are just lies and myths. You can recover from bankruptcy and it is not the end of the world. Hope this helped ~I am a bankruptcy paralegal~ |
