i took my son, to the churches chicken restuarant to apply for a job, there in the front window, and also on the side window, was two great big poster lookin white signs , that said now hireing, they were lookin for cooks, cashiers, managers,, .when my son went in to apply, the manager told him they were not hiring at this time, even though there was a huge sign in window, and on doors sayin they were hiring. so i went in and ask, then manager told me well he did not give my son a application because he had had a goatie beard, i said what? and that if ur gonna work in churchs chicken thats not allowed, so i said to the manager but he dont work here yet.. he tryin for job, so i need some really good imput, now from people, i called the corporated offices of churches to complain the guy said that the manager was wrong and something will be done about it asap. so my question is did i do right thing? are is there more i can do, if nothing is done?? thank u
If Church's has a policy against facial hair for employees, it should have been brought to your son's attention at the time he asked for the application. Generally, a hiring manager will explain the policy up-front and ask whether the applicant understands and will comply if hired.
I can understand the concern of the manager - hair in food - and the impact it would have on the business. That's why most fast food employees wear paper hats. But to say flat out "we're not hiring" while two posters are in the windows is outrageous. You did the right thing.
I hope you got the name and title of the person you talked to at "corporate". If he has not already attempted to apply, have him go back, with the goatie, to see if "something will be done". If not, file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (look in the phone book, or "google" them) |
