How many years do you have to go to culinary school to become a chef?

most culinary schools are four years and the tuition is higher than normal schools and its none of it is covered by state aid. i have several friends who are sous chefs two at very high class resorts in the atlanta area and i can tell you this....its long, long hours and not a lot of pay or respect.
