Secretary/admin/executive assistant, whatever you call it, it IS a real job. The demands of the position are greater than ever before.

The trick to moving up in the company, or moving on to another firm and a higher position, is to be good at your job, but not so good that your boss is unwilling to promote you, not wanting to lose your valuable skills. Be capable and competent...not indispensable.

If you do take the position, look around your company to see what needs to be done. Get to know everyone. Keep a record of what you accomplish. Then, after a reasonable period of time (anywhere from 6 months to a year, depending on the company and your personal situation) make your move.

Offer to help find and train your successor too.

It won't be easy. But it can be done. Good luck, and have a bright future, Mary. ;)
