I asked for a day off work, and my boss wants to know why - do i really have to share that personal info?

Whether or not the boss can ask (and I bet the rules vary state to state), you're probably safe just saying either "it's personal, I'd rather not discuss it" or "it's a family thing, I'd really rather not talk about it." Very few people are rude enough to press the issue, because they'll assume it's something private that you don't want to share. However, a boss may push back if the day you're asking off is very important (like the Saturday before Christmas if you're work retail, or the day before a project deadline at an office job).
