How to shift career to finance?

I'm interested to learn about roles within investment banking/private equity firms that I might realistically qualify for. I have a business degree, but my career for the past 6 years has been in market research/consulting. I have also been the editor of a monthly executive newsletter. To be honest, my financial skills are a bit rusty at this point.

What sort of positions (besides HR/Admin roles) can I position myself as being qualified to fill?

I would go for a venture capitalist in your field.

They are making investments and are involved in there business (kind of consultants but they do risk there own money). These people can appreciate industry knowledge and it's not all about financial skills. Source(s): running my own investment company
Investment Banking and Private Equity firms look for three basic candidates:

1. Licensed Financial Advisors/Analysts: Get your Series 63, Series 7 and other certificates for this. You'd have to take a course and get the license on your own.

2. Candidates that can bring cross-marketed leads to the investment side from other financial services businesses...you'd need to already have an impressive and portable book of business.

3. Professionals from other fields (Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants, etc.) who have a network of financially well-heeled friends and colleagues who need uniquely tailored financial services, such as AOLTA's, Escrow Services, and Structured Settlements and Trusts for dispensing funds under tax shelter.

From the sound of it, you don't fall into category 2 or 3, so my advice is to either get the additional certificates and build some credentials, or go back to school to earn an advanced degree. It isn't common at all to shift from consulting and market research to private equity. The best thing you can do is figure out what unique niche your skills with finance would be best suited for. As an example, if your marketing experience is in, say, pharma and medical devices, then your private equity angle might be investment in the same business /industrial sector. Specialization in early investment careers can get you a foot in the door.

If you are willing to take a step back in position and pay, then you can pretty much go anywhere. Especially if you are motivated you will move up very quickly (especially since you already have experience in other areas). Sometimes having experience in other areas may also help bring a new perspective to a company and the position you take.
