Does the 63/65 combo work in lieu of the 66?

I know that the 63/65 comprise the 66 however it seems like certain advisement firms out there have preference over one or the other? Is there a difference that I need to be aware of? Is it possible to take the 63 and 65 independently and work as an adviser in the business?

the 66 is a combo of the 65/63 offered in every state but you can still take the 63 & 65 separately. Please note, the NASD Series 7 is a corequisite exam that needs to be successfully completed in addition to the Series 66 exam before a candidate can apply to register with a state. You may take either exam first but must complete both satisfactorily.
I think they are for different types of "advising". Lots of firms have started playing around with terminology, and it confuses people. Frankly, I'm even a little confused myself.

I have a series 65, and own my own investment advising firm. The series 65 is the only one I have current (I passed a series 2 years ago, but they say that doesn't even exist anymore). It is good enough to become an RIA, but that may be different from what you are looking to do.

When I read the outline of what a series 66 is for, it supposedly combines the 63 and 65. The 65 allows you to be an investment advisor, and the 63 seemingly allows you to work with a broker/dealer. Apparently the 66 combines the two. Apparently, to do the series 66, you need to have taken the series 7 previously. I would guess that same requirement holds for the series 63. But it is not required for the 65.
