What can i do in an investment firm w/o a finance degree? |
im the IT guy for an investment firm. im interested in the stock market and like to become one of their analyst that sit in front of the computer all day looking at bloomberg terminal. i have a degree in computer science and doesnt like to program. i dont have a degree in finance or business. what do u guys suggest for me to do so i can get in the door of the stock anayst guy? can i just go up to my boss and said hey...i like to be like one of those stock anaylst? right now my job is pretty lay back, nothing major...just sitting and surf the net all day. but i would like to get involved in the stock anayst are are doing. and no i dont want to go back to school to get a useless finance or business degree. based on my past experience....everything i learn is from work...school is useless. and no i dont want to further study mcse, ccna, or any other computer classes. i would like to go into the stock market fields..im interested in that. well the previous answerer proves just how uppity some analysts are. that kid needs to relax. look, you are not just going to step into an analyst job w/o a degree in finance. if you work for a firm where internal job movement is accepted and supported, there should be other venues for you to get where you want to be. start out as an assistant on the desk in operations. self educate so that you have a clue about each position. since you have a degree, taking the CFA is within your grasp. you just have to make some contacts and start making the transition from the IT side. there will be a lot of stuck up, negative people (like the other guy that answered) that will most definitely try and dissuade you. if you work hard enough, do your homework and pay your dues, there will also be someone who'll recognize the effort. it CAN be done. Source(s): in the biz You're not willing to go back to school. You present yourself as an arrogant slacker with your remarks against school. You "want" to become an analyst but have zero clue on what they do. How can anyone help you? Self study the CFA program. To prove that you don't need an education in finance yet are capable at doing what these analysts can do, you need to pass the first 2 levels. After that, interview for the job. Good luck, you have no idea how competitive this field is. I'm an analyst for an investment firm. |
